What makes you different?

I think it’s important to see the common thread that connects us all no matter how diverse we are. So, every day for a hundred days I stopped a stranger and asked to take their portrait and ask them the question:

“What makes you different from most other people?”

90% of people I stopped agreed to be part of the project and the shoot took less than five minutes – here is a selection of my favourite shots. I learned that almost everyone knows their point of difference and I loved how unique all these differences are.

“I am 91 – I have lived a long time.”

“I live life to the fullest and I live day by day.”

“I come from Africa and I was born through genocide. I don’t seek materialistic desires. I prefer not to have money in my bank account as I feel I enjoy life more when I am poor.”

“My unique way of thinking about things – my unique perspective.”

“I don’t feel that much different from most other people.”

“I am totally relaxed and don’t worry.”

“I don’t have any children.”

“I spent my whole working life at sea. I was at sea from when I was 15 right up until I was almost 70.”

“I help people after a disaster situation. For example having a flooded-out or burnt-out house.”

“I was bought up by my grandparents in the 60s when single mothers were frowned upon. I didn’t meet my father until I was 48

.”

“I never lie there’s no point.”

“I am one of only five women in NZ who have wrestled professionally

.”

“I never suppress my inner child and I don’t have a filter, I never think before I speak.”

“I wear a cowboy hat and the shortest shorts when I clean windows in the summertime.”

“I’ve never been to a funeral.”

“My hair

.”
